With awareness of CBD growing and more countries allowing its sale, CBD has become popular among people of all ages, professions and walks of life. Alongside the growing body of research, the openness of well-known athletes has played a big part in bringing CBD into the mainstream. Many have spoken publicly about making CBD part of their training and recovery routines. Here are some of the athletes who have openly advocated for CBD in sport.
James Haskell
Rugby is the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about CBD in UK sport. The game places huge physical demands on the body, and recovery routines are essential. Several rugby players have spoken openly about CBD, and James Haskell is one of the best known. Now retired, Haskell is one of the most famous international rugby players from the UK, known for his impressive career, his fitness and his training regime. He and his wife, fitness influencer Chloe Madeley, have talked openly about CBD as part of their fitness routines and have shared their own CBD routine on their YouTube channel.
Eugene Monroe
Monroe was the first active NFL player to publicly advocate for cannabis reform in the league. In 2016, a few months before his retirement, he called on the NFL to revisit its policies and spoke out against the widespread use of opioid medications in the sport. He has continued to campaign for reform and for more research into cannabinoids in sport ever since.
Nate Diaz
Nate Diaz needs no introduction for UFC fans or CBD enthusiasts. Known for an exceptional fighting career, Diaz famously used a CBD vape pen during a press conference following his bout with Conor McGregor in 2016, and spoke openly about CBD being part of his post-fight routine. His openness brought a great deal of attention to CBD in combat sports.
A Note on Tested Sport
CBD was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list in 2018, but other cannabinoids, including THC, remain prohibited, and full-spectrum products contain trace levels of naturally occurring cannabinoids. Athletes subject to testing should choose isolate-based products with published lab reports and seek advice from their governing body before use.
The Sum Up
CBD in sport is not a new phenomenon, but with growing awareness and changing rules, more athletes are open about making it part of their routines. Whether you are a sportsperson, a fitness enthusiast or simply lead an active life, CBD can be part of your daily routine too – go relax and go happy.
